You may have pondered what it was about yourself that got you rejected for a job chance. Were you unqualified, or did your demeanour play a larger role?
After being turned down for a job at TJ Maxx, 23-year-old Ash Putnam took to TikTok to vent her frustration. Watches of the video skyrocketed.
Over seven million people have seen the video, and thousands upon thousands have commented on it. Upon reflecting on the topic of young people’s access to entry-level employment, the tattooed twenty-something seemed to have reached a consensus among commenters.
During her appearance on her famous TikTok channel, Putnam detailed how she applied for a job at TJ Maxx and then received a rejection email “a few weeks” later.
“They simply sent me an automated email; they were unable to even contact me by phone.”
Because she was dissatisfied with the response, Putnam returned to the company where she had applied and got into a confrontation with the employees.
“So, what was the reason why I wasn’t hired?” I asked myself. upon entering today. She claimed that other candidates had more relevant work experience and said, “Oh, you simply don’t have enough experience.”
Naturally, I wanted to know whether that was the reason, as I’m aware that many places have a strong dislike for tattoos. I don’t think it’s accurate, but regardless; she said that wasn’t the reason.
Just because I’m tattooed doesn’t mean I won’t put in the effort. I find it very perplexing. She has found that people with obvious bodily changes, such piercings and tattoos, are some of the most intelligent and talkative people she has ever met.
@ashxobrien I want to know who is also having a hard time finding a job right now! #jobs #jobmarket
Despite TJ Maxx’s evasive reaction, the Californian’s coworkers on TikTok seemed to have settled on an explanation for why the job offer was declined.
“tattoo artist located here, it’s likely the tattoos”
Human resources is represented. Customer referrals from companies like TJ Maxx would never occur to anybody.
“The ones with the most visible body modification, like tattoos and piercings, are the ones that TJ Maxx hires off the street.”
“I don’t believe it’s related to your body art…”Is that where your tattoos are supposed to be?
It would seem that Putnam shares same view about her tattoos.
“I firmly believe it’s related to them because a lot of people find my tattoos terrifying and demonic,” she told the Daily Star.
TJ Maxx never told me anything; everything is just a collection of comments people have made on my video. Some people on TikTok even say I’d be more suited to a job at a circus or a Halloween store since no one is kind to me.
She claims that businesses should reevaluate their hiring processes, regardless of whether the store’s rejection was due to her body art or not.
If they think tattoos show how well someone is in their work, they should seriously think again. It is still possible to have a successful career despite having dyed hair, tattoos, or piercings. There is a lot of creativity and uniqueness here. In 2024, people need to stop being so anti-tattoo.
