It turns out that the URL that Mattel attached on the back of their Elphaba and Glinda dolls is very explicit, thus the company is in the midst of a “Wicked” crisis.
Basically, the toy business is trying to sell action figures of the two lead witches as well as dolls featuring other characters from the film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
They included a link to “www.wicked.com” on the back of the dolls in case the buyers were interested in purchasing additional products from the same brand, but that isn’t really their website. It’s explicit content!
The Mattel toy catalog website is “www.wickedmovie.com”—a little error that might have serious repercussions for any child who has visited the site before.
A lot of parents get furious on the internet, but it’s usually because they stumbled into the site themselves and not because their kid did.
According to TMZ’s interview with a Mattel representative, the company is aware of the mistake, which was most prevalent on American-sold dolls. They are apologizing profusely and are already making plans to prevent any future dolls from having the wrong URL printed on their backs.
