The United States’ proxy war with Russia might escalate into a direct nuclear confrontation before President Joe Biden steps down in January.
Ukrainian officials, members of the Biden administration, and other lawmakers from both major parties seem certain that attacks on Russia with U.S. long-range missiles could give Kyiv a stronger negotiating position if the Eastern countries ever convene to discuss ending the war, which has raged for more than 1,000 days and killed hundreds of thousands of people.
The decision has drawn criticism for potentially prolonging the conflict, which most Ukrainians now want to end with immediate talks, as well as for potentially igniting a nuclear holocaust or, at the very least, preventing President-elect Donald Trump from negotiating peace when he takes office.
Fired missiles
Following its approval of Ukraine’s use of long-range missile systems against Russian targets, a move long opposed by U.S. officials worried about escalation and cited by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a catalyst for war between Washington and Moscow, Kyiv fired six American-made Army Tactical Missile System missiles Tuesday morning at a weapons depot in Karachev, a Russian city located 70 miles inside the country, in the Bryansk region.

We will view this as a fundamentally new stage in the Western assault against Russia and respond appropriately if long-range missiles are used to penetrate Russian territory from Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president, told the European Parliament on Tuesday, “We must not fear doing more now.”
“While some European leaders consider holding elections or similar events at Ukraine’s expense, Putin is more concerned with winning this conflict. He isn’t going to stop by himself. Conditions worsen the longer he has them,” Zelenskyy stated.
By June, Putin had taken around a fifth of Ukraine, according to the Institute for the Study of War, with Russian forces controlling 75% of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson oblasts.
“Today is the best moment to push Russia harder, and it’s clear without certain key factors Russia will lack real motivation to engage in meaningful negotiation,” Zelenskyy stated.
Hours thereafter, Russia allegedly launched drone attacks within Ukraine and launched missile strikes on Kharkiv, Dnipro, Chernihiv, and Sumy.
The American embassy in Kyiv declared on Wednesday morning that it was closing due to the possibility of a “significant air attack.”
Updates to mine and nuclear policies
In order to satisfy the demand for nuclear deterrence, Russian official media said that Moscow updated its nuclear doctrine this week with the goal of “making conventional warfare unachievable,” classifying strikes by a non-nuclear state with the assistance of a nuclear state as a combined attack.

“Irresponsible rhetoric” was denounced by the United Kingdom and other NATO allies, who reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.

According to the Washington Post, Biden approved the supply of antipersonnel land mines to Ukraine, citing unidentified U.S. officials.

According to Self, the missile systems may have been tactically beneficial at an earlier point in the war, but their deployment at this point is “counter-productive to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s stated goal towards a negotiated peace.”

What would happen if Russia attacked a NATO member with missiles and then launched retaliatory strikes? Our treaty duties would then be activated. Then, a full-scale conflict is being discussed.
The man who approved the employment of long-range missiles against a nuclear state was deemed too shabby by his own party to remain in the presidential election earlier this year, Hawley added.
