According to Medscape, the parasites cause CLM, the most prevalent tropically acquired dermatosis, by penetrating the skin.

Despite being most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as the southern United States, hookworms are no longer restricted to these regions alone because of international travel.

Walking on warm, damp sand gives the worms the chance to enter the skin and cause infection. Itching is one of the initial symptoms.
