The actress revealed her romance with the tech billionaire on Instagram on Tuesday.
The actress posted a follow-up to her Instagram comment saying, “Put a fork in it,” confirming her split with the tech entrepreneur.
“Being in the public eye means having to explain yourself to so many people, so much of the time,” Heard wrote Tuesday. In this scenario, I’d rather be silent. I love Elon and stay close even if we split up. We appreciate your support, respect, and privacy during these tough, human times.”
In the comment area of Heard’s Instagram image, Musk revealed the divorce, saying, “V cute❤️.” His longer statement said, “Although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another.”
Adding, “Long distance relationships, when both partners have intense work obligations are always difficult, but who knows what the future holds.”
On Monday, a source told PEOPLE the two “are no longer dating.”
“They had fun for a few months but are now very busy with work. Musk started the divide, the source said, making it impossible to see each other.
“Elon works 24/7. He enjoys his life. Currently, he cannot be in a relationship and terminated it.”
Heard’s contentious divorce from Johnny Depp was finalized in January, and Musk filed for divorce from wife and Westworld actress Talulah Riley in January 2015. While spotted together several times last year, dating rumors began.
The separation is surprising since the pair was seen smiling in Los Angeles in June. Heard shot Aquaman in Australia a month before with Musk.
Before they started dating following Heard’s divorce, Musk was interested in him when he featured in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills in 2013.
A source told PEOPLE, “When the time was right and they were both single last year, he started pursuing her romantically.” “She played hard to get for a while, which intrigued him.”
