For a long time, Debra’s only purpose in life was to support her daughter Kayla, who married young and had a boy, and her husband Austin, who took comfort on the couch in the living room and spent his days in front of the TV with the remote in one hand and his beer in the other.
About twenty years ago, he lost his job, but since his wife was working, he never looked for another one. He felt, for whatever reason, that Debra should remain the main provider.
But neither Austin nor Kayla ever seen Debra turn into a careless, destitute woman. She only ever used her money for Kayla’s stipend and her husband’s requirements. Kayla had grown used to her mother’s affluence and never bothered to hunt for a job.
Debra was taken for granted without realizing it for a long time. But one day something happened to her that made her change her life.
While she was waiting for her coffee at Starbucks and thought about the work that was making her sad, a group of young people shoved her and cut in front of her. Without objecting, the cashier took the kids’ orders. When Debra objected, they started taunting her, calling her a “pensioner that had nowhere to be” and a “old nag.”
She snatched up her coffee and climbed into her car in a frenzy. Looking in the mirror inside, she saw that she had been ignoring herself for too long. She barely recognized herself. She looked tired, with gray starting to creep into her hair and wrinkles on her cheeks that she couldn’t remember making. After caring for others for decades, she suddenly recognized that her own health had suffered.
It was that encounter that altered Debra’s life. Rather than going to work, she chose to get her hair cut and dyed at the nearest salon. After that, she got herself a few new clothes, including a number of sophisticated dresses.
On the way home, she called Kayla and told her that she should stop depending on her financial aid. She was an adult with a child to raise, so she had to find a job on her own. Kayla was shocked and wondered what she had done wrong. Debra didn’t have the strength to argue, so she just said it was her choice and it was final.
When they got home, Austin looked at her puzzledly. She had left work early and gone home, which irritated him. But Debra could not care less about his viewpoint. She told him that she had had enough and wanted a divorce.
Austin and Kayla needed to take control of their own life.
The following day, Austin was forced to leave the residence.
Eventually, Debra found a rewarding career. She started traveling and visited places she never would have imagined. It was a beautiful life. For the first time in years, she was content with who she was.
Her daughter, who realized that her mother had been right all along, ultimately warmed up to her. Austin begged Debra to take him back when he found work. She said she would consider that later because she was still working on reconnecting with herself.
