In response to Donald Trump’s most recent contentious tariff threats, China is not backing down. In an attempt to “Make America Wealthy Again,”
The president announced a lengthy list of tariffs on its trade partners last week, which infuriated dozens of nations worldwide.
Up to 60 nations are preparing for higher tariffs starting on Wednesday (April 9), while the majority of the US’ trade partners faced a baseline charge of at least 10 percent over the weekend.
During his ‘Liberation Day’ address, Trump named China and the European Union as the two countries that ‘rip us off’ the most, and he proposed reciprocal tariffs of 20 percent.
The statement was made at a time when the government had already raised duties on China by 20% earlier this year, totaling a 54% increase, ostensibly in retaliation for fentanyl trafficking.
Trump went one step farther and called China the “biggest abuser of them all” in terms of trade policies.
But when world financial markets crashed on Sunday, April 6, Beijing replied by slapping a 34 percent counter-tariff on US goods.
Trump responded by urging China to lift the duty by Tuesday, April 8, failing which it will be subject to an extra 50% tax.
The United States would earn a total of 104% from Chinese imports if this were to happen. The East Asian nation is now adamant and has accused the US of “bullying” and “blackmail.”
The US imposing “so-called reciprocal tariffs” on China is “completely groundless and is a typical unilateral bullying practice,” according to a statement released earlier today by China’s Commerce Ministry.
Additionally, it said that as the trade war intensifies, additional counter-tariffs against American products may be forthcoming. China’s countermeasures are intended to preserve.
The regular order of international commerce while protecting its interests in security, development, and sovereignty. They are entirely legal,” the government said.
“The US’s threat to increase tariffs on China is a mistake on top of another blunder and demonstrates the US’s capacity for blackmail once again.
“This will never be accepted in China. China would battle to the very end if the US persists on getting its way.
China’s foreign ministry also charged the US of “economic bullying” and “destabilizing” the global economy at a press conference.
Lin Jian told reporters that “trade wars have no winners” and that the United States’ “abuse” of tariffs “seriously infringes” on international trade accords.
“If the US insists on waging the tariffs war and trade war regardless of the interest of both countries and the international community, China will play along to the end,” Jian said.
The answer follows Trump’s post on Truth Social yesterday: “The United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, commencing April 9th, unless China withdraws.
Their 34% rise beyond their existing long-term trade abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025. “In addition, we will end all communication with China regarding their requested meetings with us!”
The action may offer China fresh incentives to forge stronger alliances and flood other trade nations with lower-priced products, all the while driving up prices for American consumers.
