Jim told Sandy, his book-reading wife, one evening, “Sandy, the little girl is waving at me again from the window.” Sandy grinned at Jim’s interest in their small neighbor. Jim said he hadn’t waved back when she asked. Something about her unnerved him. She stared intently, as if to communicate or want assistance.
Sandy laughed at Jim’s worries, stating the girl was probably bored and often at the window.
Jim kept seeing the tiny girl in his nightmares.
The following day, he informed Sandy he was going to see the neighbors, feeling silly. She suggested it to calm him and prevent him from worrying about the girl’s safety.
After seeing the girl wave again, he felt he had to act. That’s it, Sandy. I’ll speak to her parents, he said.
I’m becoming afraid of her. She waved like that last night. “Why is she so focused on me?”
Jim made it to the home and was surprised to hear a familiar voice after pushing the doorbell.
“Juliette?” Shocked, he whispered when the door opened.
“It’s been a while, Jim,” she said quietly.
Jim arrived at the door to a life-changing shock.
Before Jim could recover himself, the child ran to the door, calling, “Daddy!”
Juliette welcomed him inside and told him she was pregnant after they broke up years before. Jim relocated before she gave birth, and she couldn’t find him.
Heidi, his daughter, waved constantly.
Jim broke down in front of Sandy at home and revealed the shocking truth.
Sandy pondered the news, shocked and overwhelmed. After years of trying, she and Jim accepted the possibility that they might never have children.
Sandy advised Jim to test the child’s DNA for paternity. Juliette consented, and after an agonizing wait, the findings confirmed Jim’s heart: Heidi was his daughter.
Juliette apologized for the obstacles, but she just wanted Heidi to meet her father.
Jim and Sandy assured her no apologies were needed. They joyfully welcomed Heidi into their life.
Heidi stood at her window that evening, marking a new chapter. She waved at Jim again, and he waved back with joy. He accepted parenthood out of faith that it was his calling, even if it was unexpected.
