After her baby granddaughter tragically perished in a hot vehicle while in her care, a Florida grandmother was given a five-year prison term.
On November 1, 2022, Tracey Nix accompanied Uriel Schock, who was seven months old at the time, to lunch with some friends. At around 1.40 pm,
The grandmother was seen on CCTV buckling the child into the car seat before making the 10-minute drive home to Wauchula.
After parking and rolling up the windows, the grandma went inside to practice on the piano and chat with her dog.
WFTS reported that the temperature had risen to 90 degrees on that specific November day, and Uriel tragically died inside the overheated automobile.
Nix’s husband started administering CPR when he realized Uriel had been left in the blazing hot vehicle and was in grave danger,
But the child passed away from hyperthermia, according to police. Nix claimed to have ‘simply forgotten’ about the baby in a police interview.
The affidavit said that the defendant had a piano lesson on Thursday, so she left the vehicle in the yard, forgot the victim was in the back seat, and went inside to chat to her dog and practice.
The piano for a “long time.” It’s not like ‘I was rushing in the home to do anything… I simply forgot,’ the defendant said, adding that she didn’t have ‘anything particular’ on her mind.
The terrible event occurred less than a year after Nix’s second grandson, 16-month-old Ezra Schock, drowned while in her care after falling asleep.
The kid found himself in a pond after wandering behind a fence close to his grandparents’ house. In the past, Nix was found not guilty of aggravated manslaughter,
A charge that could have resulted in the grandmother doing up to 30 years in prison, but she was found guilty of leaving a kid alone in a car and inflicting serious bodily damage.
Despite acknowledging she was unaware her granddaughter was in the vehicle, Nix was sentenced to five years in jail for failing to testify in court.
“I literally forgot for a long time,” she remarked. I’m devastated by what transpired. I want to avoid giving the impression that I’m making excuses because I’m not.
At her sentence, Kaila Nix-Schock addressed her mother personally, who had lost two of her children as a result of Nix’s behavior.
“I still adore you.” According to Fox 13 Tampa, Nix-Schock sobbed as she remarked, “I hate this.” “You know I had to make a decision, even though I hate having to.
However, it doesn’t alter my feelings. Judge Brandon Rafool said after imposing his sentence: “Uriel’s case is not unique. She seems to be expressing sadness, not regret, in my opinion.
