After the US president appeared to claim credit for his appointment in the first place, Pope Leo XIV’s remarks at his first press conference as leader of the Catholic Church have been read as a covert jab at Trump.
When Pope Leo was appointed, it was the first time in history that an American was elected to lead the Catholic world.
Surprisingly, Trump claimed that even though he had nothing to do with the conclave procedure that chooses a new pope, his return to the White House contributed to this.
Trump claimed in a May 12 article on Truth Social that he had influenced Pope Leo’s appointment because he “won the Catholic vote.”
He made this somewhat strange remark while criticizing Martha Raddatz of ABC.
He wrote in one post: “It was hilarious to see old-timer Martha Raditz on ABC Fake News (the Slopadopolus show!) this morning, blurt out that Pope Leo’s selection was essentially unrelated to Donald Trump.”
