18 years old Sabrina, the daughter of a coal miner, believed that her father’s job was not “respectable.” So she didn’t talk to him, she didn’t tell him anything, and she didn’t even let him handle her belongings.
For some reason, his daughter detested him because he didn’t own a fancy car, even though he had been raising her alone from the day she was born.
One evening while on the phone with a friend, Sabrina heard the front door open. Her father, Pete, was there. She abruptly ended the call since she didn’t want him to know that her graduation ceremony was coming up. She thought that if her friends saw him with her, they would make fun of her.
Pete beamed as he walked inside the house holding two gifts. After setting the things on the table, he told Sabrina he had a present for her.
Since his daughter’s mother passed away, Pete has been there for her. He understood her and always respected her privacy.
Despite her gratitude for the presents, Sabrina always felt her father’s scarred face and coal-blackened hands made him undeserving of her love. She even prohibited him from handling her possessions.
Eager to know what was inside, she opened one of the packages and found a beautiful gown. When she saw that her dad’s suit was in the second package, her big smile soon disappeared.
Sabrina bit her lip in frustration. She summoned the courage to inform her father that she did not want him present.
Pete was completely taken aback. He had no idea how little his daughter thought of him.
“What did you say?” he asked in confusion.
My pals’ fathers are from well-known families, Dad. They’re all rich and seem like celebrities. Dad, I hope you understand that I don’t want you to stand there looking a complete mess. No matter how well you dress, everybody can know you are a coal miner by the look of your dirty hands and face. They must not ridicule me. Please don’t come to my graduation.
Pete was devastated, but he wasn’t upset with his daughter. He knew that she didn’t hate him, but that she didn’t enjoy his line of work, and that was all right because she wasn’t old enough to understand the full ramifications of what she was saying.
On her big day, Pete offered to drive Sabrina to the function, but she turned him down. He was then made to swear by her that he would not go to her graduation. Pete gave a nod, but his thoughts were elsewhere. After putting on his new clothes, he followed Sabrina outside the house.
He got there and sat in the parents’ area, applauding the graduates as they took the stage.
As soon as the presenter called out Sabrina’s name, Pete took out his phone and started filming her. She was so proud of herself that she was smiling widely and walking straight. But when she saw her father, her perspective changed. She did not even smile at him.
She wanted the ceremony to conclude soon so she could confront him, but it was all she could think about. But when the presenter called out Pete’s name, she asked him to take the stage.
Thank you so much, Mr. Lauren. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Pete said as he seized the microphone. “Will you please give us the slideshow?”
Everyone was shocked when a slideshow of Pete and Sabrina’s photos appeared on the projector. There were photos of her from a very young age before she matured into the young woman she was.
“I cherish my daughter.” Sabrina, I’m so proud of you. I hope your mother would be as proud if she were here now. If you chance to be here, Emma, you may see for yourself! Despite your warning that I couldn’t raise my child alone, I am now more proud than any other father on the earth. Sabrina, congratulations.We were successful!
The act of her father touched Sabrina. She went on stage with her father, gave him a hug, and burst into tears of joy. “Thank you very much, dad! The words “I apologize,” she said.
Pete decided it was time to be honest with his daughter as the evening drew to a close and they were leaving for home. He waited till she was eighteen, when she would be old enough to deal with the world.
Declaring that her mother was still alive, he turned to Sabrina after gathering his courage. She was still alive and lived in the same location.
Sabrina almost fainted. That her father would lie to her about that for so long was beyond her comprehension.
She had never been wanted by her mother, Pete said, sobbing. When she got pregnant, she planned to leave Sabrina and put her up for adoption. When Pete told her not to, she acknowledged that he wasn’t even the baby’s biological father, but he was still free to keep her and raise her if he so desired, as long as he still thought her mother was dead.
Pete decided to adopt Sabrina as his own before divorcing her mother since he couldn’t let her end up in foster care or be taken in by complete strangers.
“In my opinion, you couldn’t be someone else’s child. You were my universe, and now you are everything to me,” Pete cried.
“You’re not my biological father?” Sabrina asked again, wanting to be sure of what Pete had meant.
“My love for you is unaffected by the fact that I am not your biological father, honey. Don’t recall my previous statement. You will always be my daughter, no matter what.
Sabrina repeatedly apologized for referring to him as “dirty.” She was thankful that he persisted in pursuing her even though she wasn’t his biological child.
It was the first and only time that Sabrina and Pete talked about her mother. They decided to put the past in its rightful place. But after that, Sabrina never felt guilty about her father again. On the other hand, she is very proud. Pete was the man who reared her. She was happy to call him “dad.”
