Why Cher filed for divorce Gregg Allman just nine days into their marriage

Cher’s latest memoir is a trip down memory lane.

Taking “each day as it came,” the singer explains in “Cher: The Memoir, Part One” why she decided to file for divorce from her second husband, Gregg Allman, after just nine days of marriage.

In 1975, the couple chose to get married “within a few days” after becoming parents to a child.

The bride remembers, “There was little about our wedding day that was romantic.” The couple married in June in Las Vegas, four days after Cher finalized her divorce from her first husband, Sonny Bono. The honeymoon would not happen.

The following week, the Goddess of Pop and the Allman Brothers Band member filed for divorce after she allegedly discovered a “plastic bag full of white powder” in his toiletry bag and learned from pals that he had planned to split from her.

Their “belated honeymoon” in Jamaica ended early when Cher supposedly caught her lover drinking, but the couple got back together after Gregg checked himself into rehab.

The “Believe” singer later found out that Gregg had a heroin addiction and issued an ultimatum to him.

“[I] called him and said, ‘Greg, I’m just so sick of doing this. I’m so sick of accompanying you to rehab,” she recalls. The person on the other end of the telephone was silent. “But I don’t give up,” he muttered.

“His response stopped me cold, because it was accurate,” Cher adds. “Despite his past failures, he continued to attend treatment centers, continued to try to get clean, and continued to put forth effort.” I felt sympathy for him at that precise moment rather than considering my own weariness.

In 1976, the couple was still together when their 48-year-old son Elijah was born, joining Cher’s 55-year-old son Chaz Bono, whom she shared with Sonny.

The Grammy winner adds, “[My breaking] point came soon after Gregory had a paranoid breakdown one night and insisted he saw men with guns in the backyard,” referring to this incident as “the last straw.”

Children [were] not safe there,” she continues. I couldn’t take the chance, even though it just happened once.

Cher and Gregg split up once more, and in January 1979, their divorce was formalized.
